13 Tips for Healthy, Younger Looking Skin Naturally

Orginally posted on Sanandi.com

When you look in the mirror do you see your most beautiful self? What does that beauty mean to you? These are important questions to cover before we talk about staying beautiful over time because the truth is that beauty is about health.

Keeping your skin healthy and radiant takes focusing as much on your internal health as your external health.

Evolutionarily, science tells us we’re attracted to healthy, fertile partners. Since fertility is easily concealed in our species, we developed other ways to spot the cues—symmetrical features, bright eyes, a shapely physique, obvious vitality, and (yes) clear skin.

Skin is one of the first things we notice when we meet someone new. While there are lots of ways to use chemical laden products and procedures to look your best, taking the opportunity to use your beauty to bolster your health and vitality nourishes two birds with one hand.

Your skin is a unique organ in that it is one of the only that comes in physical contact with the external environment. Since it is also fed by the bloodstream, the body’s internal health also has a real impact on the state of the skin. This means there are two different avenues to ensure that your skin stays beautiful—Internal and External.

Tips for Natural Internal Health

1—Stay Hydrated

Your body is made up of almost 80% water. When you’re hydrated, your body is able to find balance, remove toxic agents from your bloodstream, and fill out your cells. When your cells are hydrated, they’re able to fill out and plump up, leaving you radiant and able to absorb your skincare products.

2—Eat Whole Fruits and Veggies

Your liver is a key player in the health of your skin because it processes the toxic agents out of your bloodstream. Treating your body to a good diet takes the pressure off your liver so it can do its job better. When your liver is optimally functioning, it has an easier job removing the toxicants from your blood, which in turn takes the pressure off your skin for removing toxic agents, and helps to clear any potential blemishes.

3—Fermented Foods are Your Friends

Fermented foods help your stomach break down food more efficiently. When your body can effectively break down the food you eat, it can nourish your body better with the nutrients you offer it. Additionally, undigested food entering the bloodstream can cause allergies, which often show up on the skin.

4—Skip the Preservatives and Chemicals

Simply put, you didn’t evolve with chemicals and preservatives and your body doesn’t recognize or know how to break them down. Typically, your detoxification organs remove the preservatives and chemicals, but they can bog down your bloodstream in the processes, meaning that your body has to find another way to push out toxicants—which can be through the skin.

5—Detox and Cleanse

A yearly detox and/or cleanse is great for your skin because, like eating a healthy diet, it helps remove toxicants from the bloodstream and take pressure off your liver so that it does its job more efficiently.

6—Immune health

Boosting your immune health is well hidden a skincare secret. A high-functioning immune system increases your body’s vitality. It helps you to shine with health, and health is the key to beauty.

Affirmations are a part of internal health that we don’t often think about, they’re good for our psychological health. Somehow this is the easiest to actually do but can be the most difficult of all the suggestions on this list to keep up—but it’s absolutely worth it.

Every morning, when you look in the mirror just tell yourself the things you want to hear. Everything from “you are beautiful” to “you deserve the best today.” My personal affirmation is to look myself in the eye and say, “I want to spend my life with you.”

Natural External Beauty Tips

8—Read the Ingredients on Your Skincare Label

Have you ever heard of greenwashing? Companies put a small amount of a natural ingredient on the label so they can claim to be a green product but these products are loaded with chemical ingredients like dimethicone, phytates, and parabens.

Read the ingredients on the labels of the products you purchase. If you can’t pronounce or you don’t know the ingredient, it’s best to steer clear of the product.

Note: sometimes a scientific name can be hard to read. It’s worth your time to google the ingredients that you aren’t sure about.

9—Apple Cider Vinegar Toner for Your Hair and Skin

Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) is incredible for balancing the pH of your skin.

To use just fill a spray bottle with ½ water ½ ACV. Optionally, add a few drops of rosemary essential oil.

If you’re using it in your hair, just spray after a shower. For your skin, spray a cotton ball and dap your skin after cleansing.

The smell dissipates after a few minutes but if you can’t stand the smell, rinse it off your skin with pure water after 30 minutes.

10—Exfoliators and Masks

Once a week, or every other week depending on your skin type (dry skin typically needs this less often), after cleansing, use an exfoliator or spread on a mask.

A Moisturizing Exfoliator: a tablespoon of ground almonds (if you make your own almond milk, dry and hold onto your ground almonds) and/or oats, ground nettle and lavender, and a teaspoon of oil. Gently massage paste onto face and neck. Wipe clean with a wet, warm towel.

A Hydrating Mask: mix together a tablespoon of honey, a tablespoon of yogurt, ½ teaspoon of lemon juice, and a tablespoon of avocado. Apply mask generously to clean skin. Leave on for 15 minutes or longer. Remove with a wet towel. Pat dry.

11—Use the Right Cleanser

The cleanser that you use is the first thing to touch your skin everyday and has a lasting effect on your appearance throughout your days. Look at the ingredients in your cleanser and steer clear of alcohols and drying chemicals.

If you’re working with dry skin, find a creamy cleanser that has moisturizing agents in it. If you have oily skin of you’re looking for something to use after you workout, try a gel cleanser that has astringent and deep cleansing actions.

12—Do You Need a Physical Hydrater?

Your skin is that last to receive nutrients from your bloodstream so even if you’re drinking enough water, it’s still possible that your skin could totally use a hydration boost from the outside. You can buy a fancy hydrating serum if you like (as long as you trust the company and the ingredients in it) but if you’re looking for an easy DIY serum, try using aloe vera gel. You can add a couple drops of lavender and rosemary essential oils to increase the effectiveness of the gel.

13—Use the Right Moisturizer for Your Skin

Using the wrong moisturizer for your skin can cause buildup on your skin or not be moisturizing enough—both of which could lead to blemishes.

I suggest using an organic oil because our skin produces oil so it absorbs more easily than a lotion.

For dry skin, jojoba oil is ideal. It has a similar consistency to your skin’s sebum and it’s high in antioxidants.

For oily skin, sunflower oil is wonderful. It is thin and absorbs deeply into the skin, allowing the skin to hold hydration.
